what is the history behind the Sweet Sue doll?
The 1950s were the most prolific period for production of fine quality dolls for the American Character company. “During the mid-1950s, children began to play with grown-up dolls. American Character’s Sweet Sue Sophisticate was one of the best according to A. Glenn Mandeville, June-July, 2001 issue of Doll Reader magazine. Mandeville stated that post-World War II women were leaving the workforce and were expected to meet new standards of glamour. This attitude was reflected in the doll industry, also. American Character produced the Sweet Sue child doll with settable Saran hair and a dazzling wardrobe, Tiny Tears, which enabled a little girl to prepare for motherhood, Sweet Sue with flexible foot and a slightly more developed body, and Sweet Sue Sophisticate with a full figure, strapless bra and feet permanently arched into a very high-heeled position. Each Sweet Sue Sophisticate came with “lingerie-type panties, nylon stockings and fine jewelry that a sophisticated young lady might wear.” Hair styles of Sophisticate doll were “more daring” than those of previous versions of Sweet Sue. In 1958 American Character licensed the Toni doll name and restyled the Sweet Sue doll slightly to become the Toni doll.
